Joanna Czarniecka's Banking Tip of the Month: Stay Alert During Tax Season
March is peak tax season, which also means its peak season for scams. As people prepare their returns and wait for refunds, fraudsters look for opportunities to take advantage of confusion, urgency, and fear.
At GCB, protecting our customers is always a priority. Here are a few important reminders from South Hadley Branch Manager, Joanna Czarniecka, to help you stay safe this tax season.
The IRS will not call demanding immediate payment.
If you receive a phone call claiming to be from the IRS and pressuring you to pay right away, it is a red flag. Scammers often use threats or urgent language to create panic. Take a breath and do not engage.
Never share your Social Security Number or online banking codes over the phone.
Your personal information is powerful. Legitimate organizations, including your bank, will never call and ask for your full account credentials or SSN. If someone asks for this information, hang up.
Be cautious of emails or texts about “unexpected refunds”.
Messages promising surprise refunds or asking you to click a link to claim money should be treated with suspicion. Scammers often design these messages to look official. Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments unless you are certain the source is legitimate.
If you are unsure about a call you’ve received, hang up and call your bank directly.
If something feels off, trust your instincts. Contact your bank using a phone number you know is real, such as the number on the back of your debit card or listed on our official website.
At GCB, we’re here for you.
When in doubt, reach out directly to us. We are here to help protect you and your financial well-being, not just during tax season but all year long.
Staying informed is one of the best ways to prevent fraud. Keep these tips in mind and share them with family and friends so everyone can bank with confidence.
